Originally built in 1832 as a private residence by a Virginia General, The Martha Washington Inn has seen many different uses.

From private residence it evolved into a finishing school for young ladies. When the armies of the Civil War battled in and around Abingdon, the building served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. After the Civil War The Martha became a women’s college, and today it is an elegant hotel.

It is believed that a young nurse, who fell in love with a soldier, haunts the inn. People have reported seeing her apparition staring out the windows, waiting for her love to return from the war. Sightings have been very reliable and people have been known to offer the staff a 'little extra' to occupy her favorite rooms.

There are also reports of apparitions of soldiers dressed in Civil War uniforms. Strange noises including footsteps, crying, and screaming have been heard on the permises.

The staff also reports that no matter how many times they change the carpet in certain rooms blood stains continue to appear.
