Emily's Bridge

The Gold Brook Bridge, Stowe Vermont

In the nineteenth century a beautiful young woman named Emily grew up in the town of Stowe. She came from an abusive and overprotective family.

The family was so overprotective that they would not allow Emily to be courted by any of the young men in town. However, one day a handsome young man came across Emily's path while she was doing chores. He instantly captured her heart.

Madly in love Emily introduced the young man to her parents. Her parents, deciding the young man was too poor and uncivilized, forbid Emily to ever see him again. Emily's parents had the young man dragged from their home while Emily watched in despair.

The young man could not be dissuaded. He met Emily while she was away from the house doing chores. Their love deepened and the young man asked Emily to elope. Emily's heart overflowed with joy. Not only would she be marrying the man of her dreams, but he would be taking her away from this oppressive life. They rushed off planning to meet at The Gold Brook Bridge the following night.

Unfortunately, Emily's parents discovered her plans. On the night that Emily was to elope they sent a couple of local thugs to find the young man and beat him unconscious so he would not make the rendezvous. They hoped Emily would believe that the young man had gotten cold feet and abandoned her. They received their wish.

Emily made her way to the bridge and waited. The night grew cold and her lover never came to claim her. Emily collapsed and began to sob, the thought of returning to her abusive parents entered her head and she became angered. She began to pound the sides of the wooden bridge until her hands were bloodied. Unwilling to return to her living nightmare Emily untied the rope that she used to bundle her belongings. She tied one end of the rope to a rafter of the bridge, the other end she tied around her neck.

She hung herself in the cold night. In the morning her lover finally arrived. Horrified, her lover cut her down and buried her near the bridge.

Today, locals know The Gold Brook Bridge as Emily's Bridge because Emily's angry spirit haunts it. Many people have experienced a disturbing phenomenon that has resulted in large scratch marks appearing on their cars. Others that have walked through the bridge have been clawed by Emily. They described it as if a pair of long nailed hands digging their way into their back and scratch down. Upon exiting the bridge they have bloody scratch marks traveling the length of their back, yet their shirt is not torn.

Some have reported hearing the sound of something dragging across the roof of their vehicle as they drive across. Upon investigation they see nothing. It's assumed this is the sound of Emily's feet dragging across the roof.

Others have reported seeing a white apparition inside and around the area of Emily's Bridge. Typically, the apparition is seen at night. Along with the apparition people have heard sounds of Emily sobbing; others have heard a helpless voice crying 'Help!’

Well, I've visited the site for many years now. Its all a waiting game, sometimes nothing happens at all, other times some major stuff goes down.

Last night I finally got some major scares. I brought some friends up who were visiting the area. It seems that it usually happens only to girls who come to the bridge but it has always been described as a burning sensation on both the arms and the back. Once you leave the bridge it slowly goes away but upon closer inspection you will see scratch marks. Not huge bloody marks, but VERY distinct scratches like hands.....

I have felt trembling, heard things, even have handprints appear on the car windows but never anything like this until last night. I made sure to take a bunch of pictures as well to document this.

Most comments and people say rediculous things, so far out it's easy to write it off as fake and BS. But in all honesty, in this case, I do respect and admire that bridge.

If you ever visit, check it out anytime from midnight until 2am as those are the times when things go down. Although there are multiple versions of the stories, it boils down to three presences. Emily, a child who was lynched there, and something else.

Check it out just for the experience, but don't be surprised if nothing happens. You have to keep visiting..... Took two years for the scratching to finally happen.

About 35 years ago, 3 friends and I visited the bridge - to make a long story short, she's real, and she attacked us. Someday I'm going to write down what happened - it's a night I'll NEVER forget.

I just went two nights ago with my boyfriend and some of our close friends. There was nothing...but i thought there was too much noise and talking w/ everyone so i decided perhaps she'd only respond to females? (just an idea) so i went in with my friends cousin...we're about the same age early twenty's...We walked in and our other friends were taking pictures the whole time. We both felt something just a feeling in our guts, in the far right corner of the bridge...something bad. Something telling us not to go there. i felt really itchy too...soon after she did as well. It felt like the floor was shaking a bit...could have just been from the water who knows..but we both felt it. Then something just told me to get out! just GO! so i took off like a bat out of hell lol. But the next day we looked at the pictures....In that very same corner we were scared of there were VERY obvious orbs. I was shocked and like everyone else i have major respect for the bridge. Scary and fascinating at the same time.

I went to emilys bridge with a bunch of friends and we were talking and asking emily questions and none of us really beleieved anything would happen. My friend decided to get out her cellphone and just start recording. After listening to the recording we heard a voice that we did not hear while on the bridge. It was a mans voice talking to us and answering our questions. we put it onto the computer and you can clearly see the spikes in audio when the ghost voice talks. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to any of us. I now beleive in an afterlife. If you do go to emilys bride record yourself talking and asking questions. You wont beleive what you hear in response.

I conducted my morning show live on the air from the bridge two years ago and a few things happened that I still today talk about on the air. Once again this year, I will be returning to the bridge at 4am to go live on the air via cell phone from inside the bridge in the dark. Tune in Friday Oct 31st (Halloween) for live happenings once again this year. You can listen online at www.froggy1009.com
