1250 East Houston St., Alice, Texas
Spending a summer's day in Alice, Texas you can imagine seeing cowboys saunter through town, seeking a break from the unrelenting dry heat.
Cowboys made up a large part of Alice's population since it was founded in 1888. Alice was considered the world’s largest cattle shipping point from 1888 to 1895. During this time it had many wild cowboys make Alice their home, and their final resting place.
Sutherlands, which was once a Walmart, has one (or two) of those wild inhabitants as a ghost.
The ghost is often referred to as 'Matilda'. No one has bothered making contact with the ghost due to its tendency towards violent behavior. While the ghost seems to enjoy practical jokes, moving merchandise to odd places or locking and unlocking doors, every so often an employee will have something thrown at them from the shelf. Some of these attacks have led to injury; all of them have led to fear.
Because of the almost schizophrenic changes in the ghost's mannerisms, many people believe that Sutherland's is haunted by more than one ghost. People believe that ghosts are making their way from the old graveyard near Sutherland's and coming inside the store to stir up some mischief.
