At the end of Devil's Stomping Grounds Rd., Siler City, North Carolina
Local legend states that a barren circular path, fifteen feet across, is where the devil paces. There he plots new terrors to bring onto mankind.
Others believe that vengeful spirits are buried underneath the patch of unfertile soil. One theory states that Waxhaw Native Americans were slaughtered and buried here hundreds of years ago. Their restless spirits now kill anything that spends too much time on their grave.
It's also believed that during the 1970's and 80's a small cult of devil worshippers would use this area to sacrifice animals in unholy rituals.
Today, people have witnessed animals avoiding the circle. One visitor’s dog choked itself on its leash to avoid the circle's center. Others that have come across the Devil's Stomping Ground have witnessed small animals dying on the edge of the circle.
People brave enough to visit the circle at night have claimed to see a pair of red eyes manifest themselves in the center. The sound of footsteps can be heard in and around the area.
The Devil's Stomping Ground has become a popular place for teens to test their bravery. One teenager had a frightening experience as he and his friends stood in the circular path. He states that, "It felt like a large hand rose from the ground and grabbed my heart. I fell to my knees, it hurt so bad...I couldn't move."
It wasn't until the boy apologized to the spirit for trespassing that he was finally released.

While I'm not a resident of the Siler City area, I am somewhat familiar with local folklore in the area. I visit the town once or twice a year and have spent many hours driving around the outskirts and rural roads. I've heard of Devil's Stomping Ground but never knew of the significance of the name or history of the site. I'll make a point to visit and explore on my next visit in the spring.
I can't believe this!! In the other article of the Biltmore Estates, I told that I was adopted. Guess what. I was adopted in Siler City NC. My Biological Mother and Husband still lives there. My Godfather also lives there. My Godmother and a Local Doctor arrranged for the hidden information for the sake of the Biological mother and My adopted Father is my real Dad. I found out this information while I was searching for my real Mother for Medical Records. I did talk with her and she asked me how in the world did I find her? We talked for about an hour and it was no question that she is my Mother. She wanted me not to tell her husband of now. I have never seen her but, I have had people in the Law INforcement and others to tell me that she is a small boned woman that has Dark skin and Black Hair. I know that I have Indian in me. My attorney said that I could find out. I was born in Raleigh for unwed single MOthers. My new parents got me at 3 days old and they have me listed in the County that I was raised in. My Real Daddy's Family always told my I was one of them and I was special. We left Siler City for good when I was 5 years ago. The ironic thing is that before my Real Dad Died. He took me to this attorney's office and the Attorney summons a woman with a large thick file that had dust all over it and Made me sneeze. He gave me a paper that gave me a start, but all were deadlines. So, I went to the Sheriff's Department and a few other and I got the address and phone number for my Biological Mother. This is a secret she must want to take to her Grave. I am and will proceed to investigate further. I hired a Attorney first and he came to a Dead end as well. Come to find out the Birth Certificate was never filed in my Birth Mothers Name, but kept in his office all those years. (wonder why?). I encourage all people that are adoped to find out where they came from. It is so Embarassing to tell Doctors: I don't know I am adopted. We have not been given our proper rights as Human Beings that were not able to speak for ourselves. Maybe I am a Waxhaw Native American. I will find out. I have a cousin that Married a man in Siler City and will contact her to help.
Jan K D.........I wish you had read your story over before submitting. You have me so lost in what you wrote; your real father? your real mother? I would have empathy for you had you been more clear in relating. Sorry
I moved to western NC in the 6th grade and my English teacher told me about the Devil's Stomping Ground, he said it's a circle in the middle of the woods where nothing grows in or around the circle and you can go up there and smooth the dirt inside the circle and come back the next day it looks like something big stomped the dirt you smoothed, He said it looked like the Devil's footprint.
I don't know if this place is haunted or not, though I would not spend the night there. Having grown up in central NC and always hearing the legend of the Devil's Trampling (or "Stomping") Ground, each of my day time visits wee marked with nervousness about actually seeing the place I had heard of as a child. My second visit was especially spooky because lying on the side of the road, next to the patch leading into the woods and the circle, was a large Bible with the wind blowing the pages past, one by one.
Okay, Im a little scared and usually when i hear about stuff like this i'm not that scared. My friend said she went and will never go again. Shes said she heard footsteps and saw red eyes and even heard moans... that is just terrifying
I'm originally from Hillsborough, NC. Me and three others from High School (back in the mid 70s) camped in the middle of the Devils Tramping Ground. Unfortunately it was an uneventful night. I read on another Internet hit that the ground may fall to suburban development. (???)
Actully the story behind the devil stomping ground is quite sad....... I learnd in school at roaring river in elementry school, its a small town in between wilkes county and yilkin county. The story goes back in the settelment days and during the wars to be free, a man whom i do not remeber the name, was hung in that spot for murders that he did not commint, he cursed the people and swore that his innacents will be proved that if they hang him for something he didnt do then nothing on that ground will grow around the tree he was hung on ever. and so he was hanged and everything died and nothing has grew there since, they say he bargined with the devil to prove his innacents to the town people's. which is the reason why it is called The devil's stomping ground., plus there the story of bugga boo creek, tom douly and anna foster, gravity hill where 5 kids were killed and if u go there and put ur car in nutrual the car will move u will here kids laughing and when u get out of ur car u'll see 10 little hand prints on ur car.the story of the hootin nanny, and the story of the witch of long bottom rd in traphill, and the santanic church, and the kids she murdered. plus many more, including in wilkes county it self. so if ur ever in this area and want a good spooke just go to these places and ave fun but the church on long bottom rd visiters u are warned that u must be cleansed after visting there, for u can take home anything, theres no telling what type of stuff has be risain up from that place. happy huntings!
