Hell's Bridge - the ghost of Elias Friske

Hell's Bridge, Algoma Township, Michigan

In the mid 1800's, when towns began to emerge in this wooded area of Michigan, children went missing. It left the improvised towns in shambles, all work and expansion stopped. The townsfolk turned to their church to find comfort and answers. In attendance was the enigmatic Elias Friske. He seemed to be a kind older man with a fondness for children. He asked to preach that day.

Elias' preached of hellfire and brimstone, and of demons that surrounded the town. He demanded the congregation's prayers or the demons would return and take more children into the dark abyss. With renewed purpose after hearing Elias preach; the town organized a search party to find the children, and to hunt the dark souls that took them. The townsfolk believed that Elias was too old and frail to join the search. They asked him to watch the town's remaining children. Elias agreed and told the search party he would take the children on a picnic, near the Rogue River. Elias explained that if the search party came back with bodies in tow, the children would be away and spared the horror.

Elias tied rope around each child's waist, creating a human chain that Elias led. 'We don't want to loose anymore,' Elias jokingly said. The children waved their tiny hands as they watched their parents head off in the opposite direction. Elias began their march into the woods.

The walk to the river was long, and the children soon tired. They asked Elias to take a break, but Elias harshly tugged on the rope leading them further into the woods. The children became frightened and begged Elias to stop, but he continued to drag them along. Soon, the children noticed a strange and horrible odor. Elias deeply inhaled the stench.

Elias pushed the children up against a tree and tethered them to it with the rope he led them with. He shambled over to a pile of leaves and uncovered the source of the smell. It was the missing children, skinned and beginning to rot. The children began to scream and cry, but the search party was miles away, far out of hearing distance.

One by one Elias destroyed their young lives, forcing the living to watch each cut, to hear each bone break. After Elias finished his murdering rampage, he awoke from his bloodlust and realized the impact of what he had done. He could not return to town. He had to escape.

Elias threw the bodies of the children into the Rogue River and he fled further into the woods.

It was dark when the townspeople returned to town. Elias and the children had not returned. It took only moments for the townspeople to realize the ruse devised by Elias Friske. Fearing what darkness may be unleashed onto the children the search party rushed into the woods that Elias had marched into.

They arrived at the bridge that had recently been built in order to cross the unpredictable Rogue River. There, gathered underneath the bridge in the icy waters, were the mutilated bodies of their children. Among the screams and wails, one young man noticed a pair of muddy footprints leading further into the woods. He sprinted in their direction and he eventually found Elias Friske, stained with blood.

The young man drug Elias back to the bridge. Elias screamed about how demons had taken control of him and that he deserved pity. The magistrate simply responded, "Hang that son of a bitch."

The rope that Elias had bound the children with was recovered and tied around his neck. The townspeople, without ceremony, hung him off of the bridge. After Elias' body stopped twitching it's said that the waters underneath him swelled, and snapped the rope that Elias hung from. His body was swept away down river never to be recovered.

Today, the Rogue River is a popular place for young people to spend a leisurely afternoon riding an innertube down it's waters. Often, they are frightened out of the water by what the have described as hands grabbing their feet from underneath the water. The hands seem to tug, attempting to pull the victim into the water. Expecting to see a pranking friend emerge from the waters, they soon realize that they are alone. Many have made their way back to the mouth of the river in tears after experiencing this frightening event.

The bridge that Elias hung from is now known as 'Hell's Bridge'. People have reported that they have heard the sound of children, at times laughing, at other times screaming. Disembodied footsteps are often heard in the area of the bridge. Many people have said that they have felt like they were followed through the woods.

Most activity seems to happen around midnight, around the time that Elias would have been hung. Hell's Bridge has acquired its name because many people have reported the sounds of demonic laughter erupting from all directions around this hour. The laughing is often accompanied by the sight of glowing eyes moving through the woods.

Others have described a dark apparition standing on the bridge, at times with glowing red eyes.

I would like to venture out to Hell's bridge at night, perhaps on halloween, and use an Ouija board while sitting on the bridge to attempt to contact the spirit of Elias Friske.

Also, how could Friske could have possibly been hung from that bridge? It looks like there is maybe 1-2 feet of space between the bottom of that bridge and the water. 0_0

Hi matt, If you do venture out on Halloween to Hell's Bridge, I'd love for you to post your findings! Although, be careful with the Ouija board, if not used properly Elias could be following you home.

About the bridge, yeah, I wrote this article with Elias being hung off the bridge, but I agree...from the photos it would look like no one could hang from that. Actually, the bridge looks a bit too modern also. However, there are two theories that help explain that, the most popular is that Elias was hung from a tree in the vicinity of the bridge pictured. Another states that the bridge pictured is not the actual 'Hell's Bridge', there's supposedly a stone bridge a couple miles down that's the actual Hell's Bridge, but I've heard people have tried to find it and have been unsuccessful.

The bridge does look modern, but it still could have been built in the mid 19th century. We did have the capability of building iron bridges back then. For example, the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, and the first iron ore dock was constructed at marquette in 1859. Hell's bridge appears to be a simple variant on a metal beam bridge. It looks like it's made from iron. I am interested to see if there is indeed another bridge in the area. Wouldn't it be easy to just canoe or tube down the whole rockford stretch of the river to see if there was another stone bridge?

It seems that the Friske killings would have happened in between the time that The first sawmill was built in Laphamville and when the name of the town was changed to Rockford (1842-1865).

I am very interested in looking into this more. Are there any online groups or sites dedicated to Hell's Bridge/Elias Friske?

I've been to there. There is no possible way he was hung off of there, the bridge is about a foot off of the water. Also, the bridge was put in in the 1950's. This 'event' was way back in the 1900's.

And Matt, the bridge is like a foot across, so it might be hard to use a Ouiji board.

But I went out there at like 3 in the afternoon, and it was eerie. It felt like I had a dream once where i saw all the surroundings by it. Odd.

Also, I've never heard of people tubing down by there and having being grabbed at....

My bad, I ment the 1800's when this happened.

I've been obsessed with going to this bridge for almost two years now. The first time I read about it, I felt this very strong need to go there. I was wondering, though, where you got the information for this article. I would like to know as much as possible about what happened, and when it happened. Any information on where you acquired this information would be awesome.

My friends and I WILL be doing an investigation of Hell's Bridge on Halloween, Friday, October 31, 2008. We will be taking digital cameras and a camcorder to log any paranormal activity we encounter. We have already done this twice already at the haunted cemetery in Pere Cheney in which our digital cameras picked up some "interesting" photographs of what appears to be a face in the mist moving towards us (it got close over 3 pictures). I am really excited to see what Hell's Bridge has to offer!

Oct 2, 2008 12:07pm [ 13 ]

The bridge is over a creek that flows into the Rogue River. Its not over the Rogue itself.

First off when we went to Hell's Bridge we walked the trail that was approximately 200 feet until we came to the bridge. We were expecting a longer hike from what some of you had said but it was a real shock when we got to it after about 200 feet. When first arrived to the bridge I heard some noises that sounded like someone gasping for breath. I seen a white shadow so we walked across the bridge to the other side to investigate. So we walked south on the other side of the bridge and felt heaviness and goosebumps. This occurred by two trees that were smaller/medium compared to the tree that you first see when you approach the bridge. So we then took pictures and there were mist in the pictures. There was no orbis. You could feel the energies in your body. We decided to go back across the bridge to the right where there is a bank. There was foam and broken trees. Nothing in this spot. We went back toward the bridge and crossed it. When we got across it this time to the right of us was a strong presence. So we stood and asked for permission and waited. Shannon peed and got scared so she told me to wonder and see if I felt anything. So I wondered and felt something in the same spot she did. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. We decided to relax our nerves and smoke a cigarettes. I squatted down and I felt the pressure of someone leaning on my back. The three went and sat on the bridge. We decided to channel positive energy of the lost souls. So we asked them to acknowledge that we were there and let them know we were there for only respectful purposes and to signal us in a visual or audible way. We sat for about a minute and a half after that. As we were waiting for the respond the ripples that were going down stream came upstream. So we asked again and about 30 seconds later and the ripples came upstream again. Then we just sat there in peace. Then while sitting there I noticed an image of a man about 150 feet down from the bridge and as we waited we could hear footsteps the sounded like he was walking through the water. Something told me it was time to get off the bridge. So the three of us got off the bridge and continued to walk toward the car. Shannon heard noise to the right so she ran over there. Nothing. So we continued to walk more and went to another bank on the left side. We stood there for about 5 minutes and then we heard footsteps of a small child. We both got the feeling that it was time to leave. As we were on the trail walking back toward the car we both got a scary feeling for about 20 seconds and then it was gone. About 20 feet later we felt it again. So we got in the car and left.

The Hell's Bridge is a very peaceful place. There defienetly is spirits and activity going on. They are not going to hurt anyone. These children are probably just finding peace.

A friend and I went to Hell's Bridge today in the mid-afternoon. When we first got there, I started taking pictures with my digital camera. I didn't see any orbs, but while my friend was standing on the bridge, I saw what looks like a small person's reflection in the water next to my friend's reflection on the photo.

As we were leaving, we stopped to look at a huge tree that looked pretty cool. As we were taking pictures of it, we heard what sounded like heavy footsteps on the bridge.

Nov 15, 2008 1:18pm [ 20 ]

Well...Last night me, my mother, and few other people went to Hell's Bridge and it wasnt all that scary. We went around 11:00 pm and stayed until 12:30 am. The only thing that we hear was bloops in the water. And what I mean is, it sounded like things were gettin thrown into the water. Then when we crossed the bridge, we were gonna take a right because there was another little trail. And we heard foot steps and we put our flash light around the area and nothing was there. But we didnt hear any laughing or crying. Then we saw like this Body bag thing. It was all white and we went to go look at it and we only got 10 ft close to it because there was this huge puddle thing and we couldnt get around it. Then when we were walking back to our car, we smelled something really bad and we didnt smell it when we went on the trail only when we came off of it. And we looked around and all we saw was this deer butt. And I know that it sounds funny but its true. And it stunk REALLY bad. It wasnt there when we first went in. And we might go again tonight around 11:30pm and Stay until 1:00 am.

Nov 15, 2008 1:32pm [ 21 ]

I forgot to say, that when we went out there on Halloween nothing happened. But when we went out there a few weeks back my friend had a camera phone and we saw two red eyes and we took a snap of it. And then we saw the red eyes but it had like a million orbs by it. But there is also another haunted place in Algoma. Its called Trestle Park.

Nov 18, 2008 9:44am [ 22 ]

Hey Jodi, a group of us went to Hell's Bridge on the 14th the day before you went and there was a rotting deer near the start of the path, that could be what you smelled. We also saw the white bag and my friend and I were going to it but were unable to get to it also, lol. It was not spooky there at all. All we heard was flowing water, and we saw nothing. We took a lot of pictures and on a few of them there are white spots? I think we would have better luck of getting "scared" if we weren't all goofing around :).

Dec 12, 2008 5:05pm [ 23 ]

We drive on Friske road all the time. I close my eyes every time we go over the river because it scares me! if you go and sit on the bridge over the river and shut your vehcile off and just listen you can hear kids, and it gets really foggy out just over the bridge, it is really scary! we decided we are going to go to where they were hung just to see and i am like really scared!

Jan 17, 2009 2:19pm [ 24 ]

This sounds awesome! But, I can not find directions to the bridge!! Can someone help me??

Jan 22, 2009 3:43pm [ 25 ]

I actually live about 3 miles away roughly. It almost seems as more of a hangout (I've been there a couple times), but in my opinion, the woods across the bridge are much more eerie than anything. There is hardly any sunlight in those woods and the ground is very dark (possibly all the mud).

However, I never heard the theory of a stone bridge. Seems like a challenge to find it, if it does exist.

Me and my buddy Mike McConnell got into the habit of trying to get scared on halloween a few years back and ventured out in search of the Ada Witch ooooooh what a waste of fuckin time and we had known to Hells Bridge even been there a couple times nothing out of the prdinary ever happend but Halloween 2005 holy shit man we went out there to poof on a doobie or 2 and walked across the bridge and just about as soon as we crossed it probably midnight or so we heard a splashing in the water which we passed off a salmon or trout running then an incredibly loud snarling and snorting noise (like the noise a buck makes when its mad, but louder) was moving through the woods east to west and probaby 20-30mph and the strangest thing was there were no foot steps to be heard and if you can take a step with out making a noise those woods are moderatly thick and the ground is covered with twigs leaves and sticks.

I'm looking to head out to Hell's Bridge with some friends within the next couple of weeks. I used to live in the area and have delighted in hearing about other people's experiences.

Jun 6, 2009 3:26pm [ 31 ]

I went lastnight with my group. The entrance is creepy and forboading in itself. Walking down the path to get to the bridge was eerie, but I'm guessing that it was just our nerves. We didn't hear or see anything out of place, while we looked around. The bridge was scary, but only because it was so narrow and twisty at the end. We decided to break off into two groups down different paths, my group went to the left along the river. We found a huge tree that was creepy looking, maybe the tree that the children were tied up to? Could very well be, we weren't sure. I had my voice recorder going the entire investigation, and we heard something that sounded like "You hoooo" in a deeper sing-songy voice, when we reviewed it later. We don't have any explanation for it, but I'm not going to rule it paranormal, because that was the only thing we caught. On the way back to our cars, one of the girls said she could here something walking at the same pace as her, right next to her in the wooded part next to the path. She turned to say something to someone behind her, turned back around and thought she saw a black shadow walk from left to right across the path in front of her. She was the only one that saw anything like that. While we were standing by our cars, after the investigation, she felt as if someone was standing at the edge of the woods watching us. We left and when I turned onto 12 mile, a cop was coming down towards us, as he passed, he turned around and followed me all the way to 10 mile, until I turned to get on the highway. I think that scared me more then the bridge itself! I think he was just making sure we weren't out there drinking or anything. Upon reviewing the pictures we took, we found some orbs in a lot of the photos, but there were a lot of bugs out last night. A few looked much too bright to be bugs though. We're just getting into the ghost hunting thing, so I wish we had the experience to know what they were. In time I suppose.

Jun 15, 2009 2:41pm [ 32 ]

i have been to that bridge multiple times. i go fishing and hunting around the bridge. the bridge is very modern and there is no way that some one could be hung there. i have been hereing these storys for along time. i do belive in ghost and demons but when i go there i just dont feel like there is anything there... it might be a diffrent bridge or this bridge was put inplace of the real HELLS BRIDGE. the water under the bridge is about 3 feet and the bridge is about a foot or two over the water. if any one lives around HELLS BRIDGE and you like to be scared make sure you check out THE ADA WITCH CEMETARY...now that is a haunted place.....just ring the bells, and find out.....................

Jun 24, 2009 4:50pm [ 33 ]

Im a believer! I have really REAL PURE TRUE evidence* that this is true , im uploading it to youtube right now, but my friends and I. There were 14 of us. We headed out last night whitch was the 06-23-09 to the hells bridge at 11:00pm we stayed until 1:30- 2:00. Damaion had a high intesity voice recorder and i was speaking to the ghost spirits of the children and Friske that night asking a whole lot of questions i was fortuantely brave enough to stand on the other side of the bridge by myself and i expirenced at first hand the errieness , The paranormal activity was making my hairs stand on high end , I beleive the infestation tends to haunt you more when your alone rather in a big group. Ok now the big proof) we all went silent and i was in the middle of two groups on the bridge i tended to poke at friske and taunt him a lot saying crazy shit, then i asked if friske was here and then I talked shit about him and soon as I said " COME ON TUFF GUY make a noise in the woods""" then then he did. I took the recorder home to examine then in real life we all heard no response but when i got home there he was on the recorder around 12;00 pm it was fricking crazy im definately goign there again!

I was there two nights ago with some friends. We got there before dusk and hung out a while. Started sitting quietly on the bridge around dusk. Got some interesting looking orbs in pictures taken around then. We started getting weird feelings on the far side of the bridge after nightfall. Distinctive cold spot next the big tree on that side as well. One friend claimed to see a shadowy figure moving around on that side. Two more random visitors showed up around 10 PM. When we all went to leave shortly after that the visitors' car was totally covered in mud with no tire tracks or recent footprints near it.

Jul 23, 2009 5:51pm [ 37 ]

I'm heading out there tomorrow with my fiance and one of our friends. Can't wait to see what happens.

Jul 25, 2009 12:14am [ 38 ]

Just got back from Hell's Bridge with my friend Megan tonight.

All was pretty quiet until nightfall. We decided that something on the side of the bridge opposite the big tree was starting to not feel quite right after the sun went down. That's where we'd been standing during sunset. We sat down by the big tree when it was dark and let one of our digital voice recorders roll. My friend took some digital photos while I filmed with one of my camcorders. We sat there and talked randomly, then I asked some questions. Megan got a cold sensation down her back (which was facing the tree; I sat facing her). I started to get cold chills. I also thought I heard people talking and walking down the path toward us. Thinking it was more curious investigators, I waited. No one came. Eventually, we started to feel so physically weird and like we were being watched that we grabbed our stuff and hauled butt up the trail. It was really muddy, but we were trying to move quickly just to get back to the car.

We got back to my house and played the recording she took on her recorder after dark, when we were experiencing things. We heard a ton of unexplainable noises including voices, a child crying, a girl singing, and really bizarre growls.

Also, I found bruises on my right arm that were not there earlier in the day. I do not recall any way in which I could've sustained these bruises. I have three on my upper arm spaced at the width of three spread human fingers, but they look like I was being grabbed by something from behind. At this angle, I couldn't have done them myself. I also have one in the middle of my lower arm. I did not see or feel any of these until I got home, took off my hoodie, and was washing my hands.

Jul 27, 2009 7:38pm [ 39 ]

I should mention, now that I've looked over the photographs I took while there using my digital camera, some weird things came up, such as faces in the water, as well as what looks like a horse's head and the upper body of a woman in the woods on the far side of the bridge.

There is also one questionable light anomaly on some video I took after dark. You can see the fireflies and how their glows showed up on my camera, but there is one light that is bigger and longer-lasting that goes in a different flight pattern than the fireflies. I'm having trouble explaining it and don't know the origin of the source.

We're planning a return trip for August 4th if anyone is interested.

Aug 4, 2009 10:41pm [ 40 ]

Went out to Hell's Bridge again last night with a group of friends. We stayed until around 11:30-ish. One of my friends was "shush"ed on the trail leading to the bridge. Another friend placed a Tootsie Roll on the tree, in a crevasse, as a trigger object. We came back to it a while later and found it was moved. On the digital voice recorder, my friend asks who moved the Tootsie Roll, then there is a little boy's voice that says "hurts." Not kidding. We collected over 20 EVPs on one digital recorder. Don't know how many my friend got on hers. It was a pretty eventful night. The mud and mosquitoes were the worst yet though. =/

Aug 7, 2009 2:49pm [ 41 ]

My sister and our friend decided to investigate this story a month or so ago. We had a bit of trouble finding the bridge at first, and we followed a path for about 10 minutes in order to find it. It was about 5 or 6 in the afternoon and we were planning on going at midnight later but it's always a good idea to be familiar with the area you are investigating instead of going into the investigation blindly. The one thing that bothered us was the part about elias being hung from the bridge. Most of you have noted this as well, and I can't remember if we actually saw a stone bridge or not. It sounds familiar but I don't believe we did. We took pictures of the area on our visit and in one photo you can actually see a demonic face in the trees. We didn't notice this until we got home and put it on the computer. Also, on the way to the bridge, we were driving and making a video. Honest to God, we saw some sort of ghostly apparition run across the street in our video. this was right before we reached our destination. It sort of looked like part skeletal bird and part human. We ended up getting too scared for our own good and never ended up going back at midnight. Our friend who was with us told her dad about this and he said that he is related to the friskes and there is no "elias" anywhere in their families timeline. However, we still believe this is true. One other thing that bothered me though is how they named the street where hell's bridge is located "friske" why would they name a street after a man who murdered children? That street always creeped me out when I would drive past it, even before I knew the story. Anyway, just an experience story for everyone to enjoy, and some questions I would love to have answered :)

Aug 7, 2009 2:57pm [ 42 ]

oh and I just wanted to leave a bit of advice as well. To the couple of you I read your comments about taunting the ghost or provoking the ghost or wanting to use a ouija board on Hell's bridge, i highly HIGHLY advise you to not do that or do it again. By provoking the ghost he will think you're up to no good and will be very angry at your disrespect. This will give you a higher chance of possession and you could get hurt. Ghost hunting is not a joke and should be taken very seriously. always thank the ghosts and say a prayer before you leave and when you arrive and always be respectful. after all, you ARE entering their territory uninvited. Possession is no laughing matter either. I am just asking for all of you to respect this and don't do anything to anger the ghosts. if you're going to ghost hunt, be serious about it. :) :) :)

Sep 18, 2009 7:59pm [ 43 ]

This location is about 3 miles from my house. How far off of Algoma ave is it? Can you get to Friske off of Algoma at all? I cannot figure out exactly where this is. Also, how long is the walk to the bridge from the beginning of the trail?

Sep 25, 2009 2:00pm [ 44 ]

i have always been interested in haunted places and when i heard about this bridge it was the one and only i didn't believe until i watched the videos and they scared me to death.

Going there this Saturday, curious on what I will see. I'll be there late at night.

Friske Road is located between 12 and 13 Mile. If you take Algoma to Rector, Rector will take you through to Friske. Turn right, and head straight until you see a dirt parking area. I'm going again on the 30th of October with a group. I just can't seem to stay away, ha ha.

Oct 15, 2009 9:01pm [ 47 ]

Jen, a group of friends and I were also thinking about going that night too, so we'll make sure to make ourselves known its us so you don't think maybe we're friske and the kiddies!

Oct 20, 2009 7:50pm [ 48 ]

Alright everyone, I've been there three times now and each had strange occurences.

First trip - Mid August of this year

There were four of us there, two of us with cameras. At first we did not really get any vibes from the place. Yes, it was a creepy footbridge barely held on at one end. However, I went across by myself and walked about the wooded area for a few minutes. I came back to the beginning of the bridge and (facing across the bridge) something very heavy was walking down that small trail to my right that runs along the riverbank. Nothing ... I walked towards it an nothing. We got some strange pictures, however. They are not mine ... and I am attempting to get ahold of them. Very strange lights. Many of them of oranges and blues ... and some snow whites. The strange thing, though, is that they were lines ... zig-zagging about people like animated lightning bolts. Also a strange green-hued mist was captured on the bridge.

Secnod visity - Four of us Late August

We decided to call Elias out ... calling him a coward and really trynig to provoke him. It did nothing until we decided to leave. Somethnig heavy it the ground to our right as we were staring across the bridge from the side we arrived on. Everything grew warm ... and lights began to play off across the bridge. I went across by myself, really challenging him. Two red lights (presumeably eyes) flashed about 10 yards ahead of me and I chased after it ... it was gone before I could even get a grasp on what it wuold have been. I went back across and we challenged him some more. This time my buddy decided to say some very nasty thnigs to Elias ... and mid-sentence he stopped and both our heads turned upstream as a little girl's voice told us that "he is not here."

Third visit - this last Sunday night

Very cold night. We got there and we could feel a heavy presence. The sound of hundreds of trees falling could be heard from one tree ... no leaves were falling. I saw a few things move ... but all in all it was an uneventful experience.

And just a note on possession, they must have your permission to possess you. You will not be possess unless you invite them. Taunting them will not allow them to possess you ... you must give them permission. Taunting them will, however, make you a likely target for poltergeist-like experiences ... physically so.

Oct 23, 2009 11:08pm [ 49 ]

Me and a couple of friends went down tonight. It was great and spooky. When we first got back there we thought we heard laughing it was crazy. I was like what was that lol. Over all i think i was more scared thAt the bridge was goin to collapse then ghosts. ( the bridge is safe). Lol. And to get to it on 13 turn left or right on to friske go all the way down pass a road that starts with a d untill u get to a turn around on the left side. Pull in. And walk in about 200 feet. :) have fun

Oct 24, 2009 2:22pm [ 50 ]

Haha Taylor, me and large group of friends went to hells bridge yesterday, same night as you. It was really rainy and annoying, my fur hood was nearly destroyed, the puddles were ruthless, but we didnt notice ANYTHING creepy at all. You can see lights from houses in the area. We heard no laughing, no footsteps, no nothing. I'd rather just have went to Ada Cemetery.

Oct 27, 2009 9:56pm [ 51 ]

if you really want to bring a ouija board out somewhere like that, your stupid. bad things will happen, and you dont want to find that out the hard way

Oct 28, 2009 11:19am [ 52 ]

My girlfriend Vicky and I have become interested in Hell's Bridge this year. We visited a few times in the daylight to get familiar with the area. Took a few daytime pictures once and one of the shots has a neon blue arc of light or something about six or seven feet off the ground next to the big tree on west end of bridge.

On Aug 29, we went out at midnight with four friends. One of them has also said that she can feel if there are auras or spirits around, whether there is a good or an uneasiness in the area around her. She said that she could feel something south of the bridge where the creek flows into the Rouge River.

As you step off the east end of the bridge, there are paths going to the left and to the right. We went about 50 to 100 feet along the rightside path and came to a spot on the riverbank that was bare and had a large tree extending over the river, while the woods opened up more away from the river. Here is where our friend really started to feel that something bad had happened at some time here. She couldn't tell whether it happened to people or animals though. Also, I heard a single grunt coming from the woods which no one else in the group had heard. Our sensitive friend became very uneasy and went back to the bridge to join her boyfriend.

After about an hour we headed back to the parking area. We took pictures but the only thing we may have captured was two orange dots in the background of one shot.

When we got back to our vehicles, in the grass next to one of them was a dead deer which looked like it had been dropped straight down into place as there were not any drag marks in the grass around it. It's eyes were missing and it's tail end was torn apart with the skin missing all the way down the backs of it's upper backlegs. This seemed to be a fresh kill as the deer was still warm to the touch of it's ear and did not give off any odor. The deer was so close to the vehicle that if it had been there when we went out Vicky says she would have stepped on it then. We couldn't get a picture of it because we had used the film up on our camera.

A week later Vicky went out with three other friends. They did not see anything, but all members of the group felt uneasy and Ken later told me that he heard grunting sounds at one point that the others did not hear. When Vicky got home, she had a bruise on the back of her thigh with something above it that looked like scrapes or a rash. She says that she does not remember getting hit by anything or slipping anywhere to account for this bruise.

Does anyone know exactly where the Stone Bridge is at that others claim to have been too?

Dec 5, 2009 4:22am [ 54 ]

It is on the East side of US 131 on the Whitetail ... something Trail.

Dec 22, 2009 7:10pm [ 55 ]

ive been to hells bridge probably 15 times over the past 3 years and have never experienced any activity. in the sparta/rockford area that bridge is very well known to the high school kids. alot of people go out there friday nights and full moons knowing others will be there looking for ghosts just to scare them. and as for the muddy vehicle early july that was probably me lol. before it became known to the kids in the area it very well could have been a place to search for the paranormal but now you need to be skeptical of everything because of ppl going out there just to pull pranks.

Mar 3, 2010 7:13am [ 56 ]

I recently visited the hells bridge I am 14 and I rode my bike their and while I was their I bring my metal detected wat I found was a old pair of handcuffs dated 18 sumthin and I found a silver necklace and I found a book can't read it out but it is a crazy person book it said stuff like we are here in sumthin for the spirits that rise and so on but when I walked the bridge their was kids screaming mommy help I want my mommy and like let me go so I ran wit my bat and seen spirits of kids in green old old clothes but when I screamed get away or I call my ppl to help they just stopped and stared into my eyes and I said WTF r u they said nothing I like stared for prob a half hour until the weirdest thing happened I was shoved by gravity but when I looked up I seen a real dark grey figure with red eyes just disapeer and after that u had to go cuZz my mom called me scared sayin where r u. And that is an awsome scary place at night

Mar 3, 2010 7:18am [ 57 ]

Mar 6, 2010 12:57pm [ 58 ]

Well, I went 2 Hell's Bridge with my little couzins. I drove them there because they've always wanted 2 see it. I was'nt scared. I don't believe in ghosts... until now. Now let's start the story.

So, we got there at exactly 12:34 am. When we all got there nothin happened. We just sat around drinkin root beer. I didn't get it but we just got in my car and left. When we were driving back 2 my dorm my 10 year old cousin said 2 me, "Um, Jack... look at these pictures i took..." so i grabbed them and looked. The first one had 3 small kids sitting on the edge of the bridge. One had it's head turned 2 the camera and was waving at it. The next one there was a man's face right up close to the camera. I freaked out and started driving 2 my dorm again. Then my 10 year old cousin said, "wait, look at the last one!" I did. And i regret it. There were about 10 of these black dog-like creatures crawling around on the bridge. They were hairy and had red eyes and long tails. Please tell me what they are!!!

Mar 24, 2010 12:26am [ 59 ]

me, my girlfriend and 2 of my buddies headed back their one night to see what the hype was all about and we have heard that the time to go is around midnight when most of the activity occurs. I personally experienced many many things while back there...for one the closer we got to the bridge the more un easy we all felt. and at one point we were all standing in a line smoking cigarettes when something jerked my arm REAL hard 3times from my left side and its impossible that any of my friends did it because they were all to the other side of me and focused on something else, I even forcefully asked them if is it was because I was so freaked out and come to find out it wasnt any of them. after that around 12:01 the current started to pick up and it just kept gettin faster and faster and when my 2 friends were standing on the bridge me and my gf saw hundreds of white/yellow lights going crazy in the area between the water and under the bridge and I swear on my life what I saw...theres just no explanation...

Mar 28, 2010 10:46am [ 60 ]

I went there yesterday at noon and saw nothing i went to the metal on i hear there is a stone one. Is there anything at the metal one? And where is the stone one?

Apr 3, 2010 12:39am [ 61 ]

I took my kids and their cousin there today 4-2-10 after 11pm. When we got there right at the pathway was a dead dear gutted. It smelled really bad so that freaked my 13yr old daughter out so she talked her cousin into sitting in the truck with her. So my husband, son and I walked to the bridge. The only things that we heard was the whole way to the bridge on both sides where foot steps. These footsteps sounded like a lighter foot. My husband questioned me about it but for the sake of my 11 year old son I said it was just animals following us.

While out on the bridge I was taking pictures and my husband heard a young girls scream. It was in the opposite direction of the girls back in the truck so just to be safe we went back. The whole way back the same footsteps followed on each side.

I did get some pictures with orbs in it. Next time we want to go with our digital recorder this time was just a quick stop as we drove back from Grand Rapids not knowing we would end up there. Oh and also the story I heard as a young kid was that he was hung from a tree near the bridge but not actually from the bridge itself.

Apr 12, 2010 1:42pm [ 62 ]

Hello! I am currently writing a book about hautings and ghost legends around the Grand Rapids area, and will be adding the Hells Bridge Legend as a chapter. I am interested in talking with anyone who may have held a paranormal investigation or had a paranormal experience at this location; or has information about the possibilty of a different bridge than the one previously thought. All names will be kept private unless requested by the submitter. Full credit will be given for any submitted photographs. Feel free to email me anytime at nicole@paranormalmichigan.com

The Stone Bridge is probably the stone Grand Rapids & Indiana railroad bridge in Trestle Park. It is now part of the White Pine Trail. I think is is just a bit north of 12 Mile.

Jun 7, 2010 3:25pm [ 67 ]

Hello! this is for the the author especially but for everyone too. I am making a documentary this summer (Summer 2010) about haunted places in Michigan and mostly around Rockford. I would like to interview anybody with cool and scary experiences that you had while at hells bridge. I would also like to interview the author and get him to retell the story for a voice over. Please e-mail me at abalas17@hotmail.com if you would like to send me any thing. Pictures stories or anything else. Also just to contact me to tell your stories. Thanks, Alec

CAn you access the bridge with a motorcycle? Husband wants to take a road trip and this is one place he is interested in stopping at.

Thanks Sarah

Jun 14, 2010 11:18am [ 69 ]

Sarah, you would have to park the motorcycle in the dirt (well, usually mud) parking area and walk the trail the rest of the way to the bridge. I don't think any motorized vehicles could make it down that path.

Jul 11, 2010 1:06pm [ 70 ]

In response to the comment below me- If you go out to the bridge you will notice that the metal footbridge is a replacement bridge. On either side of the metal footbridge there are old stone foundations, deep into the ground on each side of the river. The original bridge broke down years and years ago. Also, in order to get to the bridge you have to trek through the woods. There is a clearing, a field, just beyond the bridge once you cross that shows more haunted activity than the actual bridge. Its a large round field with a ring of trees and nothing in the middle. The river itself is scary beyond all reason. The "river" that the footbridge goes over is now a shallow stream, about two feet deep that leads into the actual Rouge River. Anyway, that's always been our experience :)

Aug 4, 2010 2:33am [ 71 ]

My friends and i went out there around midnight and walked back in the woods for a good hour. Didn't hear or see anything. I think it's a bunch of bs and just another story. I was excited after hearing stories about it, but in the end we just walked around the dark woods and through 3 ft of bushes. Not to mention going into the mud haha.

Aug 7, 2010 9:38pm [ 72 ]

Haven't been out here yet, has anyone researched the story and found any truth to it?

Aug 12, 2010 10:37am [ 73 ]

i live close to the bridge hopefully i can go there one time it looks interesting i think it is true but nobody knows if it is true

Sep 16, 2010 8:08am [ 74 ]

I REALLY want to go to Hell's Bridge, but I'm too much of a pansy lol. A few friends of mine have gone but one said it's nothing, just a bridge in the woods, but another told me not to stay after dark lol. I don't know, I guess I won't know until I go and experience this myself. We'll see :)

Sep 21, 2010 12:56pm [ 75 ]

Ive been there a ton of times, theres nothing scary there

Oct 6, 2010 9:38pm [ 76 ]

I went to this bridge when I was younger with my ex boyfriend and a couple other friends.. this was on Halloween of probably 2005? We got there about 11:50 pm and when we got to the mouth of the trail we got a few pictures.. after about three pictures we decided to begin our walk down the trail and all of our flash lights and cameras and cell phones started to malfunction... like the batteries had just been drained.. we all chickened out at this point and jumped back into the car to get out of there.. and then our car even stuttered before deciding to start.. I hear people say things like this all the time and usually don't believe it.. but this really happened to me. When we got home and got the few pictures on to the computer we saw a ton of orbs, both big and small ALL OVER , and this was at the beginning of the trail. we hadn't even made it to the bridge that night. Later, probably December or January we went out there again, mad it all the way to the bridge. It was a beautiful walk. It was a snow storm that day but by the time we got there it was just HUGE heavy snow flakes.. when we got to the bridge it was like a depressing bad feeling once we got to the bridge. but it was mid afternoon and nothing happened.. also. when we went the first time there were little blue flowers blooming all over on the trail.. in the end of october.. wierd...

Oct 31, 2010 5:37pm [ 77 ]

I've been there a few times and it's pretty crazy. Tonight is Halloween and I'm going again!

to telll you the trueth the stream could have been a river back in the 1800s due to the rivers movement it could have made it smaller. the bridge could have been rigged for the hanging. i know this sound like a whole lot of bullshit but it might be true.

Apr 18, 2011 7:25pm [ 79 ]

I have been there. It is not obviosly haunted, but I got a creepy feeling. I am a die hard sceptic and I don't think it's really haunted.

Aug 22, 2011 9:35am [ 80 ]

We went this past weekend. It was a fairly uneventful trip. I was slightly disappointed. We found the area easily and went to the bridge and beyond it for a bit. I took some pics I'll have to upload and check out, but unfortunately nothing supernatural took place for our excursion.

Kaila Wierckz
Oct 7, 2011 10:41pm [ 81 ]

So i have went to hellz bridge a couple of times and i recently read threw every single comment that has been posted. and me and 3 of my friends had seen a dead gutted rotting deer at the left of the entrance to the trail. i have previously read that people have seen the same things as me. if anyone would be interested in forming a paranormal trip out there i would be more than interested. just email me at kailawierckz@yahoo.com. please and thank you. i want to find out the real story behind this and i want to get it all on tape. and be able to prove what happens unlike all the other people on here that dont have proof. and what is really strange i will be driving on 12 mile road toward sparta and Friske st. wont even end up on my gps. let me kno if u guys are interested let me know.

Oct 13, 2011 3:23pm [ 82 ]

In response to Kaila...I stopped there one afternoon..last year on my B-day as a matter of fact. There were deer carcases all over.. I think its just an easy dump for poachers becouse that area is INFESTED with deer.. anyway.. I too would like to find out the truth.. is this just a silly story someone made up or is there some acutal facts to back it up. I didnt end up going down the trail, some creepy old guy pulled up next to me when I was about to get out of my vehicle, and took off down the trail, so I decided to play chicken chit, and wait for someone to go with me, but alass...all my friends dont want to go, or are also...chicken chit...

Oct 19, 2011 10:33pm [ 83 ]

I went there last year with two friends, it was creepy to say the least. One thing that me and one of my friends did experince, was over the river, there was a really bright flash. it wasn't in the field or in the woods but over the river. My other friend didn't notice it. we'll be going again soon.

Oct 24, 2011 7:20am [ 84 ]

I went canoeing on the Rogue several years back and about 1 mile due east of Friske on the Rogue, I cant remember if it was right before or right between US131, there is a fieldstone footing to an old bridge. If I remember right the only remnants are on the North side of the river. I wonder if this could be the old stone bridge that people are looking for? I remember the footing being fairly high, as in it may have been an old covered bridge at one time. So if that is the case, it would be plenty high to hang someone from.

Oct 25, 2011 11:50am [ 85 ]

I think everyone that goes to this bridge smokes to much pot before they get there and they trip. if you look at the land it is completely flat till you get to the metal bridge that crosses the stream. why would anyone waste their time to build a stone bridge right there? its not even a legit river. i think that hells bridge is long gone. the metal bridge is just for hunters that want to cross over the stream without getting their feet wet. (remember "hells bridge" is on public hunting land) i believe the actual bridge is located somewhere along the rogue river just not by friske. possibly east of friske

Oct 28, 2011 1:06pm [ 86 ]

So I've been there many times cuz I live close by. Not much but the first time I was there a friend of mine recorded videos and while we were all goofing around in the backround a man was screaming. But we didn't hear it just on video. Crazy. Ps I heard the iron bridge was put there by boy scouts

Oct 30, 2011 3:52pm [ 87 ]

Can some one give me directions. I'm coming from muskegon please and thank you :)

Nov 1, 2011 12:06pm [ 89 ]

Courney...you have to keep walking.. its a bit of a hike into the woods before you find the bridge. We went the other nite and the trail forked so we went left..evenually found the bridge. Or there is also a trail along the river that you can follow and you will end up by the bridge.. we found lots of trails thru the area..you probably just need to find the right one. Unfortunately when we went, nothing happend... un-eventful..but we still had fun. :o)

Nov 24, 2011 1:37am [ 90 ]

I have hunted around Hell's bridge. Literally, right across from it about 30 yards. Although I often hear children's voices, I must say that the bridge is not high enough off the ground to hang a man from it.

Nov 25, 2011 10:15pm [ 91 ]

Jake, supposidly the "real" bridge is up the river about a half mile. not sure how that bridge became "hells bridge" but i went out there one night and got some creapy pics. i took one during the day tooo and i swear theres faces in the water

My name is Cruce Grammatico and I'm an award winning documentary filmmaker. I travel Michigan with my crew uncovering strange and sometimes haunted locations on my show Michigan Uncovered. The show has over 240,000 views online. I am contacting you about Hell's bridge. I have a few questions. Can you give me an exact location of the bridge? I live two hours away and I think I've found it on Google maps but I'd like to be sure. Would you or anyone you know be interested in being interviewed for the short film? And finally, can you camp there? I was thinking about taking a few tents out and just staying the night to try and experience everything the area has to offer.

Apr 23, 2012 8:30am [ 94 ]

Me & my cousin went their recently on April 21st 2012, the bridge was not to far from the trail..the trail was hidden though by some trees and branches! We heard foot steps, saw shadows, heard voices and even found a small cross. It was a very cool experience and i highly recommend going their!!

My cousin, fiance, and I are going out there tonight. We are pretty excited. Oddly enough, one of our most favorite places to go is the Howard City Cemetery on Almy Road. We scouted out Hell's Bridge today so that we know where we are going and plan on leaving Cedar Springs about 10 tonight. I hope this turns out better than the Ada Cemetery! Wish me luck!

I was out there yesterday afternoon. Nothing happened. I wanna go out there some night.

Nov 1, 2012 1:15pm [ 99 ]

Me and three of my friends went last night on Holloween. We were walking through the woods and the whole time we felt like someone was watching us and walking behind us. As we reached "Hells Bridge" the wind suddenly picked up out of nowhere. Two of my friends walked on the bridge and didn't even get halfway. They walked at seperate time, seperately. They said the bridge started bouncing/shaking. We were taking a video and I'm not sure if you can see it on the video but all of us could see the bridge start to move like someone didn't want us crossing. We all were standing there patiently and quiet when we heard splashes in the water and walking around in the woods behind us. We were kind of freaked out so we started to head back. As we were walking back two of us heard a faint "help" as if someone had wispered it right in our ears, and all of us heard a loud, unforgettable, terrifying scream. Something was telling us that we weren't supposed to be there, we weren't there for long. On the walk back it felt like something was following us making sure that we had left. It was some of the scariest things that we had ever witnessed.

Dec 20, 2012 12:09am [ 100 ]

I went down there last Saturday night, started hearing faint sounds of laughter and screams, something grabbed my buddy on the east side of bridge, i heard him say JOE, as i looked it was as if something had his arm and pushed him in the creek, he was so scared he ran full tilt back to truck, and left me standing there. I got back to the pull in, he was soaking wet and couldn't even speak

Jan 7, 2013 11:33pm [ 101 ]

I am a Rockford, MI resident, and often I travel to Hell's Bridge in Ada. There are many off road trails in both areas, and a company has begun making bridges to cover the water ways to ease travels. The original bridge was taller than this one, but obviously suffered damages like floods and such since the original date of Elias's hanging. Hope this answers any questions or doubts of this spirit log!

Apr 12, 2013 4:22am [ 102 ]

I've been out to Hells bridge many times with friends when I was younger and then with my kids later on to creep out their friends. The bridge itself was placed there in the 1960's as a convenient path across a side stream for the local farm. The only earlier bridge was a rail bridge about a 1/4 mile away across the rouge. The only parts that can be seen now are the stone / cement foundations at the edges. As for haunting... It's creepy at night because it's a narrow trail through the woods and darkeness along a waterway... always a creepy combination, but not haunted. Why don't you ask the boys that were around the area in the 1950's (before someone even placed the iron walkway there), who were friends of my fathers and would use the seclusion of the 2 track along the river to sneak a few beers, bring their girls out to get scared in the dark and try to get in their pants. The only accuracy in the story is that there is a Fiske road that goes along the old Fiske family farm that teenagers have been parking at for generations now and got chased off from by Mr. Fiske. A story made up by a bunch of little jerks, including my dad, to make an old farmer look bad for not wanting to deal with drunken teens on his land. As for creepy noises and footsteps... deer, coons, squirells, bunnies... you really gotta watch out for them haunted bunnies out there at night. It's still fun for the creepy setting though.

so to all u guys out there i will say this i don't believe in spirits until last night< me and 3 friends and a crew called central Michigan paranormal stayed over night to find the mistry of this place and it is true and spirits are real while me and my 3 freinds and one of the adults went out and try to contact them we set a flash light out and i turned on by a spirit we also heard running and one of my friends was grabed and i found a coled spot and it was to hot to be as cold as it was

Aug 22, 2013 1:40am [ 104 ]

I just recently ventured there, last night, and tonight. The Previous night it was me and 3 friends. we didn't even make it to the bridge before stuff started happening. Branches breaking and loud footsteps, I saw a clear as day face which kind of freaked me out. My friend saw just a pair of RED EYES in the woods before even making it to the bridge. Tonight we didn't have so much luck, it was storming so once again we didn't make it to the bridge, the path was flooded. I believe we where maybe 50 feet from it. BUT we heard growling multiple times, and I was positive I heard a child's voice in the distance. Definitely haunted. And will be making another trip this weekend. Wish me luck.

I have visited this place three times. I have never seen, heard, or even felt anything paranormal or even slightly creepy at hells bridge. I really have to question the legitimacy of the recollections provided here. Anyhow, it is a beautiful place, with some beautiful trees along with the creek.

what bull. the bridge is too low to have hung from ..metal working being as it was at the time real unlikely that one was built in the middle of nowhere...and if he killed all the kids and was then killed hisself ...how do you know what happened leading up to it?????

Now I just got back from Hells bridge around 3am and I might of not went to the right one. But we went to the apparently REAL Hells bridge where it's nothing but stone or concrete. It was eerie and my brother, his girlfriend, my best friend and I got there early. So we stayed in the car and had a cigarette.

By the time it hit midnight...I could hear things. But I couldn't make out where it was coming from. We felt like someone was watching us..or something. My brother rolled down all the windows, and had to shut the car off. (The last thing you need is a dead battery on that bridge.)

Well. As soon as my brother said it was 12:00..I heard what it sounded like a child singing "hel-lo". I thought my brother did it or maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me..but I wasn't the only one that heard it. I was freaked out. Some thing is out there..but my brother sped the fuck off that bridge.

We are actually going back in 2 more weeks with more friends. I definitely want to get out and walk on that bridge. I'll probably even do a recording and try getting something.

But I saw pictures of this "Hells bridge" that everyone says it's the right one. But it's not. You have to go down farther. The one that we were on..was all modern like it was just redone or something. You guys definitely need to make time to go out there.

I only live a couple miles from here and have been here several times. Before we knew the story, I remember asking my sister if there were such things as red fireflies because I kept seeing 2 of them always in the same spot. She of course then told me about others seeing the red glowing eyes. We have also heard children running and walking in the leaves beside us on the trail. The last time we were there, I stayed at the side of the bridge with the large tree and didn't cross while others went across. They were gone for awhile and I could hear something walking and coming back down the path toward the bridge behind the bushes so I thought they had come back but nobody was there. Shortly after, I heard someone scream really loud so I thought it was one of them. When they returned, they explained they heard it too but it wasn't them. We always get some type of activity out there. It is a very active place.

Many websites I've seen say there is a turnaround for "no apparent reason." on Friske Rd. It is actually a parking area for part of the Rogue River State Game Area, and the path is an access site to the river for fisherman. The small bridge is over Cedar Creek, not the Rogue River, which is just to the south of the bridge. This area is usually flooded in the spring, as it is down in the Rogue River floodplain. I've been there a few times, and it looks like a place where teens go to drink and get high and think they see/hear things that aren't there.

I am a member of the Friske family and this whole story is not true. My great grandparents came from Sweden and there NEVER was an Elias Friske. I have been all over that property and there is no Hell's bridge. This story is fabricated and there is NO truth to it al all. It is amazing that there is this story on the internet without a shred of truth to it.

I would love to go out to this however I am disabled and can't run that fast. I have always been interested in this Bridge my sister has gone and she said she got this really bad feeling of coldness like winter had hit her. She said her head hurt and a real sick tummy. My son was with her and said the same thing about being so cold like winter had come back.

I recently went to Hell's Bridge for the first time ever and all I can say walking to was pretty scary at night at midnight. I was doing a evp session and I went back and listened to the recording and I was hearing footsteps and then I heard footsteps on the bridge with no one on the bridge at this moment and all I heard was faded scream like a little girls screams. I didn't know anything about this location until my friend recommended it and I've been ghost hunting since I was 14 years old and I'm 20 now and let's just say this place has a very demonic feeling to it and I don't mess with demons anymore after my last big lockdown investigation it's been 2 years since I went ghost hunting and let's just say I wasn't comfortable at Hell's Bridge at all. Things really do follow you in those woods I kept hearing footsteps like to the left of us and the spot that I heard it there is a creek right there so there is no way it was a human following us nor an animal cause animals don't creep on you and stop when you stop. It was a crazy night but I'm thinking about furthering that investigation to see what I can uncover and see what other things are out there besides Friske. I want to contact the children and see what their storie are and see what they saw. I will write back once I get more real evidence.

As the member of the Frise family iterated above, there is absolutely no validity to the "historical" claims that Elias Friske ever existed. However, there have been documented deaths in the area over the years. I highly suggest that anyone interested in more stories from Algoma Township check out Nicole and Robert Du Shane's book, Ghosts of Grand Rapids - http://www.amazon.com/Ghosts-Grand-Rapids-Haunted-America/dp/1626192057.

Where do we get permission to go to "Hells Bridge"?

Feb 8, 2016 2:27am [ 118 ]

Nice photo of breath or cigarette smoke on the Hell's Bridge photo. That's not a ghost. I could easily recreate that on a cold night, or on any night with a cigarette.

"The bridge known as "Hell's Bridge" is an iron bridge on a trail in state game area. You don't need permission to visit this, as it is on public lands. However, the bridge is not over the Rogue River, but is over Cedar Creek, where it meets the Rogue River, you couldn't hang anyone from this bridge. I think this story is mostly legend, and has been embelished over the years.

I have always enjoyed ghost hunting. I took my daughter and one of her friends with me to hells bridge and got some remarkable images on film. One of the pictures is pretty clear a demon, torso, arm, head with horns.... Needless to say I don't think I will be back to hells bridge.

Ive been hunting there and have experienced something that scared me enough so I will never step foot there again. I heard the cries of children and felt like something horrible happened there and I saw a shadowy figure with glowing eyes I was scared I shot at it only for it to vanish with a erie laughing .I think the currant bridge could have been built on the original site the original bridge would probably have been wooden and would more than likely have rotted away by now.one side has foundation pilings that look to big to have been placed for the currant bridge

I use to live on that dirt road about 4 years ago many times I traveled to that bridge not knowing the history at the time me and my brother would sit above the water and look down and the stones unknowing we were sitting above where a man was hung to death in fact my brother use to sit there and rest his feet on that stone I was to scared to sit above the water up there so I stayed to the side. But the creek/river itleast part of it started in our wood where there were springs only if we would've known what really happens then.

I went there tonight with a couple buddies of mine, pretty spooky to say the least. I love being scared, so I decided to cross the bridge. (which my friends told me not to do) They were too scared to, but I said "I ain't leaving till I see something!" I cautiously walked across the bridge, and jumped to the other side. Completely fine. They told me to come back, and as I was stepping back on the bridge, I felt something try to pull me into the water. I managed to get on the bridge before I fell in. At one point, my friends got the courage to go across as well, so I went with them! In the darkness, in front of the bridge, I could see a dark pair of feet, but when I shined my light over to them, they vanished. We crossed back, and at one point I could hear a child cry for a second. Really freaky. The last thing happened when we were walking back to our car. We trudged through the mud on the way back, and I could feel a hand gripping my left forearm. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't see anything really scary, so when we were driving away, I decided to yell out the window: "Come out, you little bitch!" Nothing... Definitely going back though. I have a craving to explore the unknown.

I'd like to put together a book regarding the legend of Hell's Bridge and the experiences people are reporting. I'd really love to include personal narratives from those who have been there, so if you're willing to share (you can receive credit or remain anonymous), please get a hold of me. My team has been to this location numerous times, and each time is different. We have found zero conclusive evidence to point to any validity of the legend, so we're trying to piece together why people continue reporting experiences here.

i believe there is no way u could be hung from that bridge. the water is to hi and the bridge is to low. but i do believe that there could have been a incident where someone could have died there and the perit is still around but how would we no for sure that legend really did happen.

I've fished that stretch of the Rogue several times. That bridge doesn't even cross the river, it crosses Cedar Creek. It's not that old, and not even much of a bridge. It looks like something someone hauled out there at some point so they didn't have to wade the creek from one fishing spot to the other. In the 1800's there might not have even been a bridge in Rockford (Laphamville back then), just a ford as shallow and narrow as the rogue is, and if there was a bridge it would have been wooden, and it would have been in town, not 2 or 3 miles north. I'd bet that the "spooky feelings" and "sightings" were either induced by alcohol or other substances or just by creeping themselves out, and the "orbs" and stuff that show up on pics are just the camera catching reflections off dust or bugs.

My daughter and I went to visit Hell's Bridge this past weekend. We didn't see anything with our eyes, but our phone camera, caught a big yellow, shooting orb near the tree by the bridge. My daughter saw the picture while I was there shooting a video. I have her terrified reaction caught on video. There was no way this was a bug or anything shining to reflect. I looked up yellow orbs and it says they mean warning/caution. Scared us both. It was dusk and we hurried to get out of there before dark.
